Ntobeko Sishi Makes Big-Screen Debut In Apartheid-Era Film Uhlanjululo

Beloved Gomora actor Ntobeko Sishi is stepping onto the international stage with his first big-screen role in Uhlanjululo (English title: Laundry). The film, directed by award-winning writer and filmmaker Zamo Mkhwanazi, had its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Sharing his excitement with fans, Ntobeko wrote: “Last week a film I starred in world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. My first feature titled Uhlanjululo (English title: Laundry). Seeing my face on the big screen for the first time felt like a childhood dream.

“I’m grateful for @zamobleach for being the incredible writer & director that she is. Thank you @philco1965 for your production and safe hands. Thank you to the rest of the cast and crew for making this such a joyful process. What a blessing to have been a part of this very special film.”

A Story of Dreams and Struggle in Apartheid South Africa

Set in 1968, Uhlanjululo tells the gripping story of a Black family navigating the brutal realities of apartheid. At its heart is Khuthala, a determined teenager played by Ntobeko Sishi, who must put aside his dream of becoming a musician to fight for his family’s survival.

When his father, Enoch Sithole (portrayed by Siyabonga Shibe), is wrongfully imprisoned, Khuthala is forced to step up and protect the family’s laundry business, located in an area reserved for white residents.

The business soon becomes a rare safe haven for the Black community, sparking conflict with the apartheid regime.

Uhlanjululo marks the feature film debut of director Zamo Mkhwanazi, who is celebrated for her storytelling that brings untold South African narratives to life. The film has been praised for its emotional depth, striking realism, and poignant portrayal of Black resilience during apartheid.
