NSFAS Confirms 2025 Allowance Payments And Finalised Caps

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed that allowance payments for the 2025 academic year have been finalised and disbursed. This comes in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Post School Education and Training sector.

NSFAS Allowance Caps and Allocations

The scheme has outlined detailed allocations for university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students, including those with disabilities.

• University Students:

  • Catered residences (metro areas): R65,993
  • Catered residences (non-metro areas): R56,633
  • Non-catered students (metro areas): R52,000 for accommodation plus R17,160 living allowance
  • Non-catered students (non-metro areas): R42,640 for accommodation plus R17,160 living allowance

• Students with Disabilities:

  • Additional support includes human assistance and assistive device allowances of up to R54,080
  • Travel allowances for students with transport needs: R8,027

• TVET College Students:

  • Accommodation allowances range from R69,633 (catered students with disabilities in metro areas) to R42,640 (non-catered students in non-metro areas).

Payment Timelines and Compliance

NSFAS confirmed that it processed and released payments for TVET colleges beginning 7 March, covering two months’ worth of allowances. A second payment run was scheduled for 14 March, with a deadline for registration uploads set for 10 March.

For universities, NSFAS disbursed the second upfront payment in early March, ensuring institutions could release March allowances to students by 7 March. The next scheduled payment is expected by the end of March 2025.

Institutions were reminded to upload valid registration data to prevent disruptions, and students who have lodged funding appeals were urged to submit their required documents within 30 days to avoid delays in funding decisions.

NSFAS also stated that if institutions needed to deviate from the approved allowance caps, they must first obtain written approval before processing payments above the set limits.
