NSFAS Concludes Investigation Over Allegations Of Landlord Exploitation Claims

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in its investigation into allegations that landlords were exploiting students, reveals that the claims could not be substantiated.
This follows a Sunday World report published on 16 February 2025, which alleged that some landlords were demanding sexual favours from tenants struggling to pay rent, particularly in areas housing TVET college students.
NSFAS, in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Thekwini Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, launched an investigation on 17 February 2025.

However, the scheme found no supporting evidence for the allegations. NSFAS disclosed that the student mentioned in the report was not registered at the institution.
Also, stated that the lack of formal complaints made it difficult to verify the claims or provide direct support to affected individuals. Despite encouraging students to report such incidents to the South African Police Service (SAPS), no cases had been officially lodged.
“Should further credible information emerge, NSFAS will reopen the investigation to ensure appropriate action is taken,” the scheme confirmed.
NSFAS strongly condemned exploitation, harassment, and gender-based violence, stressing that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
“Landlords found guilty of misconduct will face blacklisting and the termination of their NSFAS accreditation,” the scheme warned.

Students who experience similar incidents are urged to report them to SAPS and obtain a case number. They should then notify NSFAS Speak Up so that appropriate action can be taken.
NSFAS further reassured the public of its commitment to student welfare and its zero-tolerance policy against wrongdoing.
