NPA Weighs Bail Decision For Zimbabwean Politician Job Sikhala Arrested In Pretoria

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has yet to determine whether it will contest the bail application of Job Sikhala, a former Zimbabwean MP arrested in South Africa for alleged possession of explosives.

Sikhala appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday, following last week’s arrest. Authorities reported that 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors were discovered in his vehicle on Kgosi Mampuru Road.

He is expected to return to court on Wednesday to formally apply for bail. Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the NPA, stated that investigations are ongoing.

“We have not decided whether we are going to oppose their release on bail because we still need to do bail investigations and get their profiles. Only then will we decide whether we should or shouldn’t oppose bail,” Mahanjana said.

Supporters Claim Job Sikhalais Being Targeted by Political Rivals

Outside the courthouse, a group of Zimbabwean activists gathered to voice support for the Citizens Coalition for Change leader.

Baron Mahlangu, one of Sikhala’s supporters, insisted the former MP was being set up. “Job is not a stupid person who can take explosives and put them in his car. Job is innocent, and we will investigate and find out who is behind this. I’m saying that he was framed,” Mahlangu said.

Another supporter, Trust Ndlovu, expressed similar confidence in Sikhala’s innocence. “A person of his calibre, a person of his intellectual capacity, and with his conscious to law, wouldn’t put explosives in his car,” Ndlovu said.

The court is expected to hear Sikhala’s bail application later this week as the investigation continues.
