NPA Prepared To Fight Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Bail Appeal

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed it is prepared to oppose any bail appeal from alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

This follows Wednesday’s ruling at the Alexandra High Court, where Matlala’s bail application was dismissed. The court flagged suspicious details, including two passports linked to him and inconsistencies in his Department of Home Affairs records.

According to official records, Matlala departed for Eswatini in 2024, but no re-entry was captured in the system. The State further claims he is in possession of a fraudulent Eswatini passport under the name Vusimuzi Dlamini.

Background to Matlala’s Arrest / NPA Prepared to Fight 

Matlala was arrested in May on charges connected to three attempted murder cases, one of which involves a hit on his girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane. At the time, he abandoned his bail application.

Earlier this month, however, Matlala brought another application before the Alexandra Magistrates Court. That attempt was also struck down on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the NPA, spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the State is not worried about a potential appeal.

“As the NPA, we have indicated that we are ready to oppose such an application, should it be taken to a higher court. Of course, he will be exercising his rights by approaching the High Court,” Mjonondwane stated.

She added that the prosecution has assembled a strong team to argue against Matlala’s release.
