NPA Disappointed As Alleged Crime Boss Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe Granted Bail

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has voiced its disappointment following a Johannesburg High Court decision to grant bail to alleged crime boss Katiso “KT” Molefe.

On Friday, the High Court overturned an earlier ruling by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, which had denied Molefe bail. The court found that the lower court had erred in its judgment.

Molefe has been accused of orchestrating hits on popular musicians DJ Sumbody and DJ Vintos, whose real names are Oupa Sefoka and Hector Buthelezi, respectively. He has also been mentioned in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and is alleged to have links to a large-scale drug cartel.

Judge Cites “Interest of Justice” in Bail Decision

Judge Brad Wanless ruled that Molefe’s release on bail was in the interest of justice, despite the NPA’s strong opposition. The ruling has sparked public debate, as the accused faces serious criminal allegations involving organised crime and murder.

The court found that the Magistrates’ Court had misapplied the law in its initial decision to keep Molefe in custody pending trial.

The NPA’s regional spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwana, confirmed the conditions set by the High Court for Molefe’s release.

“The appellant is to report to the Morningside Police Station on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The appellant’s passport shall remain in the possession of the investigating officer, and the appellant is not permitted to apply for any travel documents until the finalisation of the trial,” she stated.

Despite these restrictions, the NPA has made clear its dissatisfaction with the ruling, maintaining its position that Molefe poses a flight risk and remains a person of significant interest in ongoing criminal investigations.
