Former North West Premier Bushy Maape Dies At 68

Former North West premier Kaobitsa Maape, widely known as “Bushy” Maape, has died at the age of 68. His passing was confirmed on Sunday morning, 17 May 2026.

Maape died on Saturday after a short illness while surrounded by his family and children. Tributes have already begun pouring in for the former North West premier and long-serving ANC veteran.

ANC Veteran Bushy Maape Remembered After Passing

In a statement released by the family, Maape was described as a caring and respected figure whose presence positively impacted many people around him.

“He was a loving, humble, kind-hearted, and respected man whose presence brought warmth, wisdom, and strength to those around him.

“Bushy will be remembered for his caring nature, his laughter, and the love he shared with family and friends.

“His memory will forever remain in our hearts, and his legacy will continue through the lives he touched,” the statement read.

ANC Pays Tribute To Former North West Premier

The African National Congress honoured Maape as a freedom fighter who was imprisoned on Robben Island during apartheid for his political activism.

ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu praised Maape’s contribution to the liberation struggle and community development.

“Comrade Maape dedicated his life to the struggle for liberation, the advancement of the people of South Africa, and the empowerment of communities through education, serving the movement with discipline, humility, and unwavering commitment throughout his life,” Bhengu said.

“The ANC dips its revolutionary banner in honour of comrade Bushy Maape and extends its heartfelt condolences to the Maape family, his comrades, friends, and the people of the North West province.”

Bushy Maape Served As North West Premier From 2021

He served as premier of the North West province from September 2021 until May 2024. He took over the role after former premier Job Mokgoro stepped down.

Before becoming premier, Maape held several senior government positions, including roles linked to RDP programmes and strategic planning within the premier’s office.

His academic achievements included obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Economics through University of South Africa while imprisoned on Robben Island. He later completed honours degrees in Developmental Studies and Economics at University of the Western Cape.

The ANC said Maape’s life symbolised the sacrifices made by liberation struggle veterans who contributed to South Africa’s democracy and development.
