No Arrests Four Months After Cape Town Hit-And-Run Death As Family Alleges Police Cover-Up

A Cape Town mother has been left devastated after learning that no arrests have been made, four months after her son died in a hit-and-run incident allegedly involving an off-duty police officer.

Alex Scott, 21, died on 30 November after he was struck by a vehicle in Bellville. The tragedy has since sparked concern following claims about the circumstances surrounding the driver.

Reports that emerged after the incident suggested the driver may have been an off-duty Ravensmead police officer, who was allegedly collected from the scene by a marked police vehicle before investigators arrived.

Investigation Delays In Cape Town Hit-And-Run Case Raise Concerns

In a recent parliamentary response regarding the case, authorities indicated that arrests could only be made once the investigation is fully completed, despite police reportedly knowing the identities of those involved.

Member of Parliament Nicholas Gotsell, who has been closely involved in following the case, described the prolonged investigation as troubling. He formally raised concerns with Parliament, prompting a response from Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia.

Cachalia confirmed that the vehicle involved had been seized and registered as evidence, with a forensic examination already conducted.

He said: “Warning statements were obtained in both cases, and the case dockets were submitted to the prosecutor at Bellville Court. The prosecutor directed that the investigation be finalised before any arrest is effected.

“The only outstanding investigations are the blood analysis report of the deceased from the State Forensic Laboratory and the report from the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).”

Family Of Alex Scott Speaks Out Amid Ongoing Uncertainty

Scott’s mother, Abby, said she and her daughter Ashley remain in the dark about developments in the case. The family only received confirmation of his death in February, months after the incident occurred.

She said: “I just feel that they are going to sweep everything under the rug and their lives are going to go on as per normal, but ours will never be the same again. They didn’t bother to check on him or get medical help.

“They robbed us of our son. He was a good boy and so young he had a whole life to live ahead of him.

“I am trying so hard to process the fact that Alex is gone. All I can think about is when I gave birth and when he was a baby and a small little boy.”

As the investigation continues, the family is still waiting for answers, with key forensic reports yet to be finalised.
