Nine Police Officers Implicated In Murder Of Charl Kinnear

The recent announcement by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has brought to light the shocking involvement of nine police officers in the murder of Charl Kinnear.
Kinnear, who was the head of detectives in the Western Cape, was tragically shot outside his home in Bishop Lavis in September 2020.

On Tuesday, the IPID revealed the declassification of a previously classified report concerning Kinnear’s murder.
The report had been kept under wraps since 2022 owing to sensitive information regarding witnesses and police officers not yet charged.
Mario September, the director of investigations for IPID in the Western Cape, disclosed that nine officers, including the former head of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), have been implicated in this grievous crime.

Implications for the Involved Officers
In his statement, September highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “With regard to the SAPS members, we will start with the most senior… the former commander of the AGU.”
The implicated ranks include two brigadiers, three captains, and three warrant officers. The names of these officers have been forwarded to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action and possible prosecution.
