Nigerian Televangelist Found Not Guilty Of Rape, Human Trafficking Charges

In a highly anticipated judgement, the High Court in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, has acquitted Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, 63.

Omotoso the televangelist, and his two co-accused, Lusanda Sulani, 41, and Zikiswa Sitho, 33, were acquitted of charges including racketeering, trafficking in persons, rape, and sexual assault.

The Nigerian televangelist and two others, had been on trial for approximately eight years, with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) hoping for a guilty verdict.

Allegations Of Abuse And Exploitation

Omotoso, the leader of the Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church, was accused of recruiting congregants, employees, and other individuals under the pretext of spiritual benefits or improved living conditions.

The court heard that the televangelist Omotoso, allegedly arranged for the complainants to travel to his hotels in Durban, Israel, or Nigeria, where they were subjected to abuse and exploitation.

The complainants were allegedly forced to abide by “house rules,” including surrendering their cell phones and avoiding contact with male companions.

Judgement And Reactions

Judge Irma Schoeman delivered the judgement after meticulously detailing evidence from the State, the complainants, and the defence.

Schoeman noted that while there were unsatisfactory aspects of the complainants’ evidence, it was not entirely incredible.

However, the defence’s evidence was not properly tested through cross-examination by the prosecution.
