Nigerian High Commission Apologises As ‘Igwe’ Coronation Row Sparks Unrest In Eastern Cape

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued an apology to Oscar Mabuyane following backlash over the alleged coronation of a Nigerian “king” in East London.

The controversy centres around Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, who was reportedly crowned “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London” during a ceremony in KuGompo. Footage of the event spread rapidly online, drawing criticism from political parties, traditional leaders and community groups.

Nigerian High Commission Clarifies Event as ‘Cultural Celebration’

In a letter addressed to Mabuyane, the High Commission stated that the gathering was not an official coronation but a symbolic cultural event.

“We assure the honourable premier that the supposed installation was a mere cultural celebration, and we are genuinely sorry for the negative perception this development may have caused,” the commission said.

“The pomp, fanfare, and media coverage surrounding the event — which understandably drew public ire — are highly regretted.”

The commission further emphasised that the ceremony was an isolated occurrence and that there was no intention to establish any form of monarchy within South Africa.

“Contrary to the narrative in the public domain, no coronation took place and none intended,” it added.

Reaffirming diplomatic ties, the commission said: “We hold the traditional institutions of South Africa in the highest regard and would not allow our nationals living in any part of the country to denigrate, disrespect or affront the traditional council.

“The historical and brotherly bond between South Africa and Nigeria is steeped in a shared history of ubuntu and the liberation of the African people. We will never endorse any act capable of undermining our warm and cordial relations.”

It also appealed for calm and urged authorities to help de-escalate tensions and discourage further protests.

Violence Erupts as Protest Turns Destructive

Despite the clarification, protests in KuGompo escalated into violence, leaving parts of the city damaged.

Demonstrations initially began peacefully, with groups including ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance, and civic organisation March and March opposing the alleged coronation.

However, unrest broke out after a man was allegedly stabbed during the protest, triggering retaliation.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed damage to property:

“Confirmed figures of damaged vehicles are 10 with one partially torched building in North End. Firefighters arrived in time to extinguish the fire. Thus far, no arrests have been made.”

Public order police remain deployed in affected areas.

Authorities, Leaders Call for Calm Amid Ongoing Tensions

Eastern Cape MEC Zolile Williams distanced his department and the House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders from the event, rejecting the “so-called installation”.

Meanwhile, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality condemned inflammatory remarks linked to the controversy. Spokesperson Bongani Fuzile said such statements threaten social cohesion and stability.

Mabuyane’s office indicated that engagements with national departments and stakeholders would be intensified to address concerns, including those related to undocumented immigrants.

The High Commission has also issued a safety advisory to Nigerian nationals in South Africa, urging them to avoid protests, limit movement, and refrain from making inflammatory comments.

Investigations into the violence and the circumstances surrounding the protest are ongoing.
