Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Faces Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee Over Police Corruption Allegations

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is scheduled to make his first appearance before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating alleged corruption within the criminal justice system.

His testimony comes just two weeks after a three-day appearance before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria, where he detailed similar concerns. Parliament confirmed that all logistical and security arrangements have been finalised for the hearing, which will be led by Advocate Norman Arendse.

Committee to Question Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Over Removed Case Dockets and Crime Intelligence Instability

Unlike the Madlanga Commission proceedings, Mkhwanazi’s two-day testimony before the parliamentary committee will include direct questioning from MPs. The committee comprises representatives from eight political parties, with the African National Congress (ANC) holding the majority.

Following opening statements and the evidence leader’s questioning, each committee member will have 30 minutes to pose questions to the provincial commissioner.

The committee’s terms of reference include probing the removal of 121 case dockets from the political killings task team — allegedly done under the direction of Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, acting on an instruction from Minister Mchunu, who also reportedly ordered the disbandment of the task team.

In addition to investigating the status of the dockets, the committee will also address instability within the Crime Intelligence division, which has faced criticism for internal conflicts and leadership disputes.

Mkhwanazi’s testimony will be followed later this week by that of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, who is expected to appear on Thursday as the inquiry continues its deep dive into corruption allegations within the police service.
