In the latest development from Soweto, a significant clash has occurred between a group comprising members of Operation Dudula and the Patriotic Alliance and migrant-owned shops. This upheaval followed an unfortunate shooting incident that left 22-year-old Lusanda Ngxongo hospitalized.
The shooting reportedly took place on Saturday, allegedly instigated by a shop owner after Ngxongo accidentally spilt a cold drink on the premises.

Anna Mnisi, mother of the victim, Lusanda Ngxongo, has expressed profound distress over the ordeal. Her son is currently in intensive care, battling the severe consequences of the shooting. Simultaneously, Zandile Dabula, a leader within Operation Dudula, has articulated a pressing need for community safety.
Dabula emphasized the frustration felt by locals due to the perceived threat, asserting that migrant shop owners’ readiness to resort to firearms only exacerbates community tensions.
In response to the incident, Operation Dudula has taken decisive actions. Dabula mentioned that the group intends to shut down all spaza and tuck shops in the White City area. The goal is to reclaim these spaces for local residents.
She stated that this movement isn’t a one-off event but will continue with efforts to engage various stakeholders to support the community’s needs. Since Monday, Operation Dudula has reportedly closed about 22 tuck shops.

The presence of law enforcement has been minimal in managing the situation. Two police vehicles and one with crime prevention wardens briefly appeared and then left the scene.
This has raised questions about the effectiveness of police intervention in situations that escalate tensions within the community. Currently, the situation remains volatile, with both sides firmly holding their ground.
