Watch: Severe Storms Displace Over 20,000 Homes In Cape Town

"We currently have over 20,000 homes affected, so we will definitely not be able to accommodate everyone, only the worst affected," Hill-Lewis said.

More than 20,000 homes in 37 areas across Cape Town have been severely affected by recent stormy weather. The third cold front in a week made landfall on Wednesday night, leading to widespread flooding and significant damage to property.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been visiting some of the worst-affected areas. He noted that the most impacted regions are generally informal settlements. These areas are often located on river banks or near stormwater retention ponds, which are now swelling to the point of bursting their banks.

He also mentioned that teams are working on cleaning up fallen trees and unblocking roads, with most of this work already completed in several areas.

Despite the adverse conditions, efforts are ongoing to mitigate the situation. The city is focusing on providing immediate relief to the worst-hit residents while also working on long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences. The community is urged to remain vigilant and follow guidelines issued by local authorities.
