On Tuesday morning, an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in the Durban CBD killed a man and injured nine others.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, they received calls about a shooting and a vehicle accident along Russell Street, right after Victoria Street, shortly after 9:40 a.m.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered absolute commotion, according to Jamieson.
He said an apparent cash-in-transit robbery had occurred, and the suspects had started shooting at random.
“Unfortunately, one person believed to be a shop owner had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and he has been declared deceased at the scene,” he said.
According to Jamieson, the CIT car then sped away to avoid confrontation, colliding with a taxi.
The CIT van then drove off the road and slammed with several sellers on the roadside.
“A total of seven vendors and one taxi driver have sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and have been stabilised on scene by multiple ambulance services, and have been transported through to nearby hospitals for the further care that they required,” said Jamison.
According to Jamison, one of the guards had moderate injuries and was being treated by advanced life support paramedics.

“Russell Street has been closed to all traffic whilst the investigations are underway and I would advise all motorists to avoid this area at all costs,” he added.
