A two-year-old girl was reportedly raped while she was at a daycare in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. In a deeply distressing account shared on Twitter, the aunt of a two-year-old girl, Zanothando, revealed the horrifying incident of sexual assault that occurred at Emma’s Crèche in Sherwood, Durban.
The incident, which took place two days ago, has left the family shattered and seeking urgent justice.

The incident came to light when Zanothando’s mother found her sitting outside alone, separated from her peers.
Upon seeing her mother, the child immediately wanted to leave and mentioned she was tired.
Her behaviour was peculiar; she could barely walk and asked to be picked up due to pain. The severity of the situation became apparent when she needed to use the toilet but had already soiled herself.
While cleaning her up, her mother discovered blood and dried blood clots in her private parts. The child’s emotional agony and physical pain were undeniable.
Rushing to Addington Hospital, the family was told they needed a specific letter detailing the incident. After procuring the letter from the police, they endured a gruelling wait only to be informed by a gynaecologist that there were no ‘visible bruises.’ This response added to the family’s frustration and distress.
At the police station, Zanothando’s mother had to recount the traumatic incident multiple times under great emotional strain.
The police demanded a statement from the exhausted two-year-old. Zanothando identified a teacher as responsible for her pain, a revelation that pointed to a harrowing betrayal of trust at the crèche.

The family is now calling for the closure of the crèche and the accountability of all involved staff, emphasizing the systemic failures in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.
As her aunt pleads on social media, the family seeks the public’s support in spreading awareness and demanding justice for Zanothando. This case underscores the urgent need for better protective measures for children and more efficient justice mechanisms in cases of GBV.
The family is resolute in their pursuit of justice and urges everyone to stand with them to ensure no child endures such devastation again.
