The Springs Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case against two police officers who were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for allegations of kidnapping and extortion. The case has been rescheduled for Wednesday for a formal bail application.
Constables Thabiso Pule Molefe and Paseka Matena, aged 31 and 33 respectively, made their first court appearance on Monday following their arrest last Thursday. IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping provided accounts of the incident leading to their arrest.
Allegedly, the officers instructed a man in Springs, identified as Pita Muthisse, to enter their vehicle under the guise of an investigation into illegal mining activities.

The two police officers allegedly handed Muthisse over to Basotho nationals who subsequently demanded a ransom of R2 million for his safe release. The ransom amount was later reduced to R150,000 and eventually to R20,000.
This incident has raised serious concerns about police misconduct and abuse of power within the community.
The incident was reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, and swift action was taken. The two officers, who are stationed at Midrand Highway Patrol, were arrested and charged accordingly. The case has been closely monitored by IPID to ensure justice is served, and the upcoming bail application will be a crucial step in the judicial process.
