Gauteng police are currently investigating a devastating crash that resulted in the loss of four prisoners and a police officer in Waverly.
The incident occurred on Monday when two vehicles collided on the M1 near the Athol Oakland off-ramp. The police car was responsible for transporting ten awaiting trial prisoners from the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court to the Johannesburg prison.
According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the tragic collision was the result of a road rage incident between the driver of a Ford Ranger bakkie and another vehicle. The driver of the bakkie lost control, causing the vehicle to collide with the police car carrying the prisoners.
Tragically, three male prisoners, one female prisoner, and the police officer driver were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Ranger and other victims involved in the crash were rushed to the hospital with injuries.
Gauteng police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are conducting further investigations into the incident. This devastating crash serves as a reminder of the dangers of road rage and the importance of maintaining control and composure while driving.
