Traditional Healers Sentenced To 10 Years For Pension Fraud

During the consultation, Rashid and Lubenga convinced the complainant that he was communicating with his ancestors, leading him to resign from his job to access his pension funds.

In a recent ruling, the East London Regional Court has sentenced two bogus traditional healers, Kiseka Rashid, 46, and Tony Lubenga, 34, to an effective 10 years in prison.

The duo was convicted on charges of fraud and violating the Immigration Act, highlighting a significant case in the fight against financial fraud and exploitation.

The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, arrested Rashid and Lubenga on March 18, 2021. According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant-Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, the incident began on July 1, 2019, when the complainant visited a traditional healer in East London CBD.

During the consultation, Rashid and Lubenga convinced the complainant that he was communicating with his ancestors, leading him to resign from his job to access his pension funds.

Following their instructions, the complainant withdrew all his pension money, totaling R3 million, and handed it over to the accused with the promise that it would multiply.

The fraudulent nature of the scheme became apparent when the promised returns did not materialize, prompting the complainant to report the matter to the Hawks for investigation.

Since their arrest, Rashid and Lubenga have been awaiting trial prisoners. They made numerous court appearances before their eventual sentencing by the East London Regional Court.

In addition to the 10-year sentence for fraud, they were also handed a three-month imprisonment for contravening the Immigration Act. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the critical role of law enforcement agencies in protecting citizens from fraudulent activities.
