Joburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane emphasised that the demolition of these old buildings is a crucial step in saving lives.

In the past, privately owned buildings would often have owners who would disappear, making it difficult for the city to hold them accountable for the safety of their properties. This lack of oversight has led to disasters like fires occurring in these buildings.
