Adding to the shocking nature of the crime, de Jager had recently insured Liezel for a significant amount of money. Just two months prior to the murder, he took out a policy for R3.29 million.

Werner de Jager, the alleged wife killer, died on Monday from a suspected drug overdose.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed de Jager’s death, stating that he passed away due to medical complications. However, sources close to the investigation claim that he died from a drug overdose. De Jager had been denied bail and was scheduled to appear in court on May 10th.

The details of Liezel’s murder are horrifying. According to the state, de Jager beat and cut her throat at their home in Amanzimtoti.

The couple’s two children were reportedly present during the incident. It was revealed that their relationship had deteriorated to the point where they were sleeping in separate bedrooms.

Adding to the shocking nature of the crime, de Jager had recently insured Liezel for a significant amount of money. Just two months prior to the murder, he took out a policy for R3.29 million.

After killing her, de Jager attempted to stage the scene to make it appear as though Liezel had been raped. Maria Roodt, the investigating officer, stated in an affidavit that de Jager intended to humiliate and degrade his wife even after her death.

During his bail application, de Jager denied the allegations and claimed that an unknown intruder had killed Liezel. However, Magistrate Zamanyuswa Nyuswa rejected his plea, citing overwhelming evidence against him.

It is understood that the National Prosecuting Authority is also considering charging de Jager with two counts of murder for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident in the Free State in April of the previous year.
