Nearly a year after a tragic incident in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal, where five people were killed and two others injured, the police have made a significant breakthrough.
The victims included three security guards who were escorting the chairperson of a taxi association. The incident occurred after the alleged gunman had already killed two other individuals in a separate incident nearby. Two additional individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the shootings.
Last month, the KwaZulu-Natal Police successfully traced and arrested a suspected hitman, 24-year-old Sphelele Gumede, at his hiding place in Emanguzi.
Emanguzi is located near the border of Mozambique, approximately four and a half hours away from Tongaat. Gumede appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, where bail was opposed. His next court appearance is scheduled for 12 March.
Private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) deployed its officers to the murder scenes and confirmed the use of high-calibre weapons in the attacks.
The crime scene investigation revealed that a white Ford Ranger bakkie was found at the robots, riddled with multiple bullet holes from high-calibre weapons. The three occupants of the vehicle tragically lost their lives.
While attending to the scene, a white Mercedes Benz arrived, and the driver informed the RUSA members that one of his passengers had been shot. This passenger was identified as a taxi boss and was likely the intended target of the assassins. The injured male was a security officer assigned to protect the taxi boss and received treatment for a gunshot wound to his hand.
The arrest of the suspected hitman brings hope for justice to the victims’ families and the community affected by this tragic incident. The ongoing investigation will shed light on the motives behind the attack and provide closure to those affected by this senseless act of violence.
