Members of the Grahamstown Highway Patrol and Grahamstown Crime Prevention Unit successfully confiscated abalone with an estimated street value of more than R500,000 and arrested a suspect.
The incident, which took place on August 5, 2024, underscores the commendable vigilance and dedication of the involved law enforcement officers.

On the evening of August 5, 2024, at approximately 18:00, while patrolling along the N2, police officers from the Grahamstown units noticed a white NP300 bakkie speeding in the opposite direction.
Their instincts aroused, the officers decided to give chase. The pursuit intensified near Lothians Gravel Road where the suspect’s vehicle came to an abrupt halt. The driver, later identified as a 41-year-old male, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
The officers, showcasing their agility and quick response, managed to apprehend the suspect. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered an astonishing 13,661 units of abalone.
The Nissan NP300 LDV was also confiscated, as it was used in the commission of the crime. The precise instincts and prompt actions of the police officers led to the successful recovery of valuable marine resources.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Grahamstown Magistrate Court on charges of possession of abalone. Commenting on the successful operation, Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka, lauded the officers for their vigilance and commitment.
