The South African Weather Service has confirmed snowfall on Table Mountain and other parts of the Western Cape, including the Cape Winelands.
This rare weather phenomenon has already triggered various warnings about an impending cold snap affecting parts of the country, including the Northern and Eastern Cape.
Senior forecaster Mbavhalelo Maliage has indicated that the snow is expected to be part of an intense cold front moving inland by Friday.
This cold front has resulted in showers, rain, and snow in high-lying areas like Table Mountain, Sutherland, and Ceres. According to Maliage, the temperatures will remain cool to cold across the Western Cape.
The South African Weather Service has also forecasted strong winds over the interior and coastline. These winds, combined with the cold front, are expected to maintain the chilly conditions for the next few days. However, there is an optimistic outlook that the snow and intense cold front will start clearing by the weekend.
Maliage stresses that people should remain vigilant, especially in regions where warnings have been issued. The persistent cool temperatures may affect daily activities, and residents are advised to prepare accordingly.
Strong winds particularly pose risks along the coast, and precautions should be taken to avoid unnecessary exposure.
