Quarrelling Couple Leave Scores Homeless After Setting Their House Ablaze

On Friday night, a tragic incident unfolded in Laezonia, north of Johannesburg, as a fire engulfed several cottages, resulting in the destruction of homes and critical injuries to two individuals.

According to a resident, a woman returned home allegedly intoxicated and proceeded to attack her elderly husband while he was watching television. In a horrifying turn of events, she reportedly poured petrol on him and set him ablaze, causing their home to catch fire and subsequently spreading to neighboring cottages. The close proximity of the dwellings exacerbated the situation, leading to the destruction of multiple homes.

The non-profit ambulance service, CERT, responded to the scene and managed to rescue two individuals from the flames. However, both victims suffered severe burns and were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the fire claimed the lives of a beloved cat and dog, leaving the affected home completely destroyed.

By Saturday morning, the full extent of the damage became evident. In addition to the initial victims, at least two other families found themselves displaced and their homes destroyed as collateral damage. The community rallied together, issuing a WhatsApp call for aid to support the displaced residents.

“We extend our gratitude to the kind-hearted residents who assisted those affected by the fire, many of whom escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs. We are urgently seeking funds and food donations to support the six displaced residents,” read the community’s appeal.
