According to Fort Hare University authorities, a group of students set fire to parts of the campus just hours before their mid-year exams.
Social media videos show some of the university’s infrastructure engulfed in flames.
Students are said to be unhappy with the exam schedule.
According to CCTV footage, the entryway of the university’s indoor sports centre was gutted by fire, and furniture and computer labs were vandalised.
It said that students and faculties were consulted about changes to the schedule weeks ago and all complaints were attended to.
Turns our Fort Hare students didn’t want to write exams…so they burnt one of the exams halls. What kind of children do you people bring up? Is this plan now, just burn everything if shit doesn’t go your way? pic.twitter.com/iqUedTYWGW

The University of Fort Hare (@ufh1916) is burning as students torch exam halls to halt the start of exams. These are live scenes of the burning Sports Complex where all major events, including exams, happen. I’m not sure what it’ll take to fix this historical institution. 💔💔 pic.twitter.com/jXZr4Fhv47
