Freitag’s bullet-ridden body was discovered in a field near the Zandfontein Cemetery in Pretoria West last Monday afternoon, 1 July. The discovery was made during an extensive search operation for the missing athlete.

In addition to the gunshot wounds, Freitag was allegedly stabbed. Despite exhaustive efforts, police were unable to recover the knife, projectile, or bullet casings at the scene.

The towering 2.04m-tall athlete had celebrated his 42nd birthday just days before the tragic incident. On the early morning of 17 June, Freitag was picked up by a man from his mother Hendrina Pieters’ home in Bronkhorstspruit.
