On Sunday, a police officer was killed and another was injured after being ambushed while responding to an armed robbery in Mpumalanga.
According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Dineo Sekgotodi, the incident occurred in the Masoyi policing precinct in the evening.
“Two police officers were attending to an armed robbery when they were ambushed. The two were shot at. One succumbed to injuries and the other was taken to hospital,” she said.
She stated that no arrests have been made and that a hunt for the suspects has begun.
This comes just days after criminals injured two Cape Town police officers in a shoot-out allegedly prompted by an argument over confiscated alcohol.
The killings of police officers were highlighted on Friday at the release of first-quarter crime statistics.
According to police officials, 31 officers were slain in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023-2024, which ran from April to June.
This is an increase from the 18 murders committed over the same time period in 2022. Ten officers were slain on the job, while 21 were killed off the job.
