On Tuesday morning, more than 120 individuals, primarily foreign nationals, were apprehended in a series of coordinated raids across Durban.
These raids aimed to crack down on crime, specifically targeting hijacked buildings and residences harbouring illegal immigrants.

Among those arrested was a suspect wanted for multiple rape cases in Umlazi. Additionally, law enforcement officials seized counterfeit US dollars and ammunition.
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, stated that the operation commenced early in the morning, focusing on illegal firearms contributing to the region’s high crime rates.
Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasized the government’s dedication to combating crime and deporting undocumented nationals. He mentioned that restoring Durban as an economic hub is a top priority, involving collaborations with the mayor, provincial police commissioner, and various departments.
Ntuli reassured that these operations are neither isolated nor final; more actions will follow to address problematic buildings across the province.

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the KZN police commissioner, confirmed that these raids are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities.
Ethekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba elaborated that 76 derelict, abandoned, hijacked, or overcrowded buildings have been identified. Of these, 58 are privately owned, and 18 are government-owned, necessitating higher-level intervention.
The comprehensive nature of these raids reflects a firm stance against crime and illegal occupancy.
As Durban strives to reclaim its status as an economic powerhouse, both government authorities and law enforcement agencies remain committed to ongoing operations.
