The MEC for Community Safety and Security in Mpumalanga, Vusi Shongwe, is sounding the alarm on the rising number of fatal car accidents in the province. With two separate crashes claiming a total of nine lives on Saturday morning, Shongwe is calling for calm and cautious driving.
The first tragic incident occurred when a sedan and SUV collided head-on on the N4 toll road near Vosman.
Sadly, both drivers and one passenger lost their lives, with no chance of survival. Meanwhile, on the R38 Road between Barberton and Manzana, a minibus carrying passengers from Johannesburg to Mozambique overturned, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.
Shongwe emphasizes the importance of rest for those embarking on long journeys, as fatigue can be a silent killer. Long-distance travelers must ensure they have sufficient breaks and rest periods to avoid exhaustion behind the wheel.
The authorities are currently investigating both accidents to determine the causes and potential factors involved. However, the MEC’s plea for caution and vigilance on the roads should not be taken lightly. It serves as a reminder to all drivers to prioritize safety and responsible behavior while behind the wheel.
Let us heed Shongwe’s call for calm and cautious driving and strive to reduce the number of fatal car accidents in Mpumalanga. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
