In a significant breakthrough, the Nigerian police have apprehended three port workers allegedly involved in a smuggling syndicate responsible for trafficking drugs, pistols, ammunition, and military items.
The illicit goods were being transported from Durban, South Africa to Nigeria. The discovery of cocaine and cannabis in shipping containers from Durban has prompted the Nigerian authorities to initiate an investigation into the syndicate.

Announcing the arrests on Sunday, 25th February 2024, Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), stated that the operatives had begun to expose the members of this organised criminal network.
The three suspects arrested were identified as Falowa Samuel Kayode, who played a role in clearing the containers, Anjorin Idowu, a dock worker, and Uzairu Ahmed Iguda, who supervised a terminal at the port. However, another key figure, Mohammed Muktar Sule, a dock worker suspected of being a crucial organizer, was still at large.
Further investigations have revealed that three kingpins, believed to be based in South Africa, are connected to the smuggling operation. The wanted individuals are Odeyemi Taiwo Emmanuel, Akinyemi Olayinka, and Adebayo Adewole Emmanuel.
Nigerian authorities have sought the cooperation of the South African Police Service in apprehending these individuals.
The arrest of these port workers and the ongoing investigation into the syndicate highlight the joint efforts between Nigeria and South Africa to combat transnational organised crime.
