The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Genl. Fannie Masemola, has reiterated a strong message that South Africa is not a safe haven for criminals.
His firm stance emphasizes that anyone breaking the law will not go unnoticed; they will be pursued relentlessly regardless of their hiding place.
Masemola praised the dedicated multidisciplinary team operating at OR Tambo International Airport for their unwavering vigilance.
Their efforts have yielded remarkable results, culminating in the seizure of over R13 million worth of illegal drugs in just two months, which includes approximately R12 million worth of cocaine. This significant accomplishment has led to the arrest of nine drug traffickers caught red-handed with these illicit substances.
In a noteworthy incident, the police, in collaboration with airport security, customs officials, and ACSA staff, apprehended a Nigerian drug mule. The suspect, who had just arrived from São Paulo and was en route to Nigeria, became embroiled in suspicion when he attempted to hand airline headphones to a cleaner.

Upon inspection, it was revealed that these headphones were concealing cocaine. While the mule maintains that he was in Brazil to procure clothing for resale, investigators suspect ulterior motives behind his claim.
Masemola clarified that such arrests and the ongoing battle against drug trafficking should serve as a stern warning to traffickers. The message from SAPS is clear: those who choose to engage in illegal activities will face justice, reinforcing the unwavering dedication to combatting drug-related crime within the nation.
