Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane announced an independent investigation at Pretoria High School for Girls following the exoneration of 12 pupils accused of racism.
The issue came to light after a protest revealed a WhatsApp group exclusively for white members, allegedly containing racial comments and complaints about black pupils.
The Department of Educational Services stated that while it respects the school’s governing body’s (SGB) decision, the independent probe aims to determine if a culture of racism exists at the institution.

The SGB’s three-member panel, which included an advocate, found the 12 girls not guilty of physical violence, bullying, disruptive behaviour, and breaching school rules due to insufficient evidence.
The principal, Phillipa Erasmus, was suspended earlier for allegedly not acting against racism at the school. On Friday, the acting principal, Danica Stoffberg, notified parents that eight of the 12 girls would retain their prefect status as the accusations were unsubstantiated.
Despite the findings, the department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, emphasized that the independent investigation would focus on identifying any underlying issues of racism within the school culture.

The independent investigation will not re-examine the charges against the 12 pupils but will focus on broader allegations of racism.
The terms of the independent inquiry will be detailed upon appointing a relevant body to conduct the investigation. This measure illustrates the department’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and non-discriminatory educational environment.
