Mbhalati worked as the department’s deputy chief education expert in Johannesburg’s south.

On Thursday afternoon, he was presumably followed home from work by unknown suspects, who fired multiple bullets at him as he sat in his car.

Mbhalati served the department with honour and respect, according to Matome Chiloane, MEC for Education in Gauteng.
