Manhunt Launched After Gun-Toting Robbers Blow Up Cash Van On KZN Coast

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, the KZN police spokesperson, an unidentified group of men travelling in a bakkie opened fire on the cash-in-transit vehicle, forcing it off the road.

The police have initiated an extensive manhunt following a daring robbery involving a cash-in-transit vehicle on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) North Coast. This alarming incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the R74 towards Maphumulo, shortly after lunch.

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, the KZN police spokesperson, an unidentified group of men travelling in a bakkie opened fire on the cash-in-transit vehicle, forcing it off the road.

The suspects, who were heavily armed, subsequently held the security officers at gunpoint, depriving them of their firearms. They then proceeded to blow up the safe inside the vehicle and made off with an unknown amount of cash.

The KwaDukuza South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Brigadier Naicker confirmed that a multidisciplinary team is conducting a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. The team comprises various law enforcement units, utilizing all available resources to track down the suspects responsible for this violent crime.

Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya, the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, emphasized that cash-in-transit heists remain a significant challenge in South Africa.

He assured the public that efforts are being intensified to curb these criminal activities and bring the culprits to justice.
