A caregiver’s son, Washington Simperi, aged 20, has received a life sentence for the horrific crime of raping a 10-year-old girl at a Johannesburg daycare.
The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court concluded that the act was committed on March 11, 2022, after a thorough investigation led by Sergeant Mabale. This breach of trust, committed in a place meant to ensure the safety of children, has cast a shadow over the community.

The Crime and Its Aftermath
On the day of the incident, the young girl’s mother dropped her off at the daycare, unaware of the danger that lurked within. Simperi exploited this trust, inflicting severe harm on the minor.
After the assault, he attempted to cover his tracks by instructing the child to relieve herself in an effort to destroy vital DNA evidence. Fortunately, the victim opened up to her mother, prompting a swift response from law enforcement that ultimately led to Simperi’s arrest.

The Impact on Victims and Community
The emotional and psychological ramifications of such a crime often extend far beyond the immediate effects. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, emphasized that, despite counselling, the victim will likely endure lasting trauma and flashbacks.
The court found no evidence supporting the defence’s claims that the injuries were self-inflicted, highlighting the rigorous process of seeking justice in such cases. The ruling also ensures that Simperi is permanently registered in the national sex offenders registry and prohibits him from interacting with children in the future.
