The Limpopo police have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a 38-year-old awaiting trial prisoner found dead in the Seshego police station’s holding cells earlier this week.
The prisoner, who was facing trial for allegedly committing rape, was discovered unconscious during a routine check-up.

According to police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba, the incident occurred on August 19. Ledwaba explained that the deceased had been making several court appearances concerning the alleged rape, which was committed in January.
The deceased’s next court appearance was scheduled for September 3.
Col Malesela Ledwaba stated: “Preliminary reports indicate the deceased was discovered unconscious during a routine check-up and was certified dead by emergency medical services.”
Following this, an inquest docket has been opened, and the circumstances surrounding the deceased’s sudden death are being thoroughly investigated by the police.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is also involved in investigating the matter. The objective is to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the demise of the prisoner while he was in custody. As the investigation proceeds, further details are expected to emerge.
