The community of Lavender Hill on the Cape Flats is reeling in shock after the body of a woman who was kidnapped last month was found buried. Charlene Josephs, 57, endured a terrifying ordeal on the evening of July 10.
During a power outage, masked gunmen invaded her St Montague Village home, forcefully abducting her at gunpoint. The residents were left stunned by the movie-like scenario that unfolded, and the motive for this heinous crime remains unknown.

The incident was promptly reported to the Steenberg Police Station, where a comprehensive investigation commenced. Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that Josephs’ body had been found.
A multidisciplinary team comprising the provincial organised crime’s anti-kidnapping team, crime scene investigations (CSI), Operation Lockdown, Steenberg and Muizenberg visible policing, and the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement worked meticulously to unravel the case.
Persistence in the investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man on August 18, 2024. The suspect appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on August 20, charged with kidnapping.
Further pursuit of leads resulted in the apprehension of a 49-year-old suspect on August 19. This crucial arrest ultimately led to the tragic discovery of Josephs’ body in a sand grave behind the municipal landfill site in Muizenberg. The body bore multiple stab wounds.

Both suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and kidnapping. The court proceedings have been postponed until September 6 for a formal bail application.
The community of Lavender Hill continues to grapple with the shock of this brutal crime. While arrests provide a measure of progress, many questions remain; the motive behind the kidnapping and murder of Charlene Josephs is still unclear.
