A shocking case has emerged in Alexandra, Johannesburg, where a sangoma named Isaac Motaung is facing trial for heinous crimes against young initiates. Motaung appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of rape, attempted murder, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The incidents allegedly took place between 2020 and 2021, involving initiates aged 12 and 14. According to the Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, Motaung not only raped the children but also forced them to engage in sexual intercourse with each other.

What makes this case even more disturbing is that Motaung was HIV-positive at the time of the crimes. Both victims discovered this fact later, which led to the additional charges of attempted murder.
One of the complainants had the courage to come forward and lay charges at Alexandra Police Station in June 2021, resulting in Motaung’s arrest. He has been in custody ever since.

The trial has been postponed to 30 November, as there may be more victims, and the police are actively searching for them.
