In the early hours of Wednesday, a marked SAPS patrol van was involved in a significant incident after it ended up in a canal in Gordon’s Bay, located approximately 50km from Cape Town. The double cab bakkie was discovered partially submerged and lying on its left side.
Investigation On Police Van
According to police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi, the local police have registered a case of reckless and negligent driving.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3 am when the driver of the vehicle lost control while driving down Lancaster Road. Fortunately, both occupants of the patrol van sustained only minor injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Community Concerns and Previous Incidents
The Gordon’s Bay community has expressed concerns about this stretch of road, especially given previous accidents in the area. Thurstan James Cole, a local, shared on social media that he has responded to similar incidents at the same location multiple times.

He noted the concerning trend of drivers losing control and ending up in the ditch, particularly during the early morning hours, which raises questions about road safety and driver awareness.
