The SA Police Services has suspended two Eastern Cape police officers who attempted to sell a double murder docket for R20,000.
Sergeant Luyanda Innocent Maneli, 41, of Swartkops, and Warrant Officer Richard Ntokozo Zungu, 56, of New Brighton, are accused of attempting to sell the double murder docket in December 2022.
Last week, the Gqeberha High Court granted the Hawks’ Gqeberha Priority Crime Specialised Investigation (PCSI) a forfeiture order for R20,000 in cash and a car used as an instrumentality worth R138,000.
Provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela stated that on December 27, 2022, the Hawks received information regarding a police officer attempting to sell a docket.
“Due to the quick action of the investigation team, Zungu was caught and arrested in possession of R20,000 cash in his vehicle and his private vehicle which was used during the alleged commission of the offence, being a white Toyota Corolla worth R138,000, that was also seized during the operation.”
Mgolodela stated that Maneli was later arrested following their preliminary inquiry, which claimed the couple conspired to conduct crime.
She stated that the proceeds from the vehicle’s sale will be transferred into the Criminal Asset Recovery Account (CARA) for use by the state.
Since then, Zungu and Maneli have been suspended from the SA Police Service and their pay have been halted.
They are still being held as awaiting trial inmates.
The case is scheduled to be heard again in court on August 22.
