A 44-year-old female suspect was apprehended on Thursday for allegedly committing perjury and stealing her 20-day-old grandchild. The incident, which took place in the peaceful village of Tshidaulu, Mbilwi, has left the community in shock and disbelief. The suspect is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou magistrate’s court on Monday to face charges.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

According to a police report, the suspect, who is the grandmother of the stolen baby, was sharing a room with her 16-year-old daughter and other children. The daughter had her 20-day-old baby sleeping on a separate bed. However, on Wednesday morning, when the teenager woke up to get ready for school, she was devastated to find her precious baby missing.

An Intensive Search Operation

Concerned and frantic, the family immediately launched a search for the infant. They scoured every corner of the village, hoping to find any trace of the missing child. As time passed without any sign of the baby, the grandmother reported a missing person case at the Thohoyandou police station on behalf of her minor daughter.

A Deceptive Phone Call

As the investigation unfolded, the police contacted the grandmother on her cellphone. Shockingly, she misled the authorities by claiming that she was at work in Levubu. However, diligent police work soon revealed the truth. It was discovered that the grandmother was not at her workplace but was seen walking with a paper bag, which she concealed at an unknown house in Tshidaulu, Mbilwi village.

A Miracle Discovery

With the assistance of the Makhado K9 unit Dog, another search was conducted in the area. To everyone’s immense relief, the baby was found abandoned in the house. Miraculously, the infant was unharmed and was immediately taken to the Trauma Centre for safekeeping.

Confession and Arrest

During the subsequent interview, the grandmother confessed to stealing the baby and fabricating a false case of a missing person. She cooperated with the police, leading to her immediate arrest. Meanwhile, the baby was joyfully reunited with her distraught mother, who had been living through every parent’s worst nightmare.
