The Gauteng Department of Health has taken swift action against a bogus doctor who attempted to extort money from a patient at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. The incident occurred on Sunday night, and the department has since opened a case at the Diepkloof police station.
According to Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Health Department, the bogus doctor demanded a payment of R700 from the patient in exchange for “assistance.”
However, suspicions arose when the individual failed to provide their Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registration number.
The patient became wary when the bogus doctor, dressed in green scrubs with the name Dr. Zulu imprinted on the uniform, instructed them to meet at the pedestrian gate to make the payment. The patient promptly alerted the hospital’s security personnel, who apprehended the imposter at the gate.
When asked to provide her HPCSA registration number and personnel number, the bogus doctor was unable to do so. This further confirmed the suspicion that she was not a legitimate medical professional. The individual spent a night in custody and was scheduled to appear at the Orlando Magistrate’s Court on Monday afternoon.
Modiba emphasises that any fees payable at the hospital should be handled through patient administration. Patients should receive an invoice detailing the specific services they are being charged for.
