It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of former Constitutional Court Justice, Yvonne Mokgoro.
Her loved ones have confirmed this news to the media. Justice Mokgoro passed away on Thursday at approximately 5pm in a Johannesburg hospital. Her death follows a prolonged struggle after a severe car accident nine months ago, from which she never fully recovered.
Justice Mokgoro served as a judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from its inception in 1994 until the end of her 15-year term in 2009.

She played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s legal landscape. As one of the pioneering black members of the judiciary in the country’s democratic era, Justice Mokgoro exemplified dedication and scholarship.
Justice Mokgoro’s contributions extended far beyond the courtroom. Throughout her legal career, she taught numerous courses, including constitutional law, human rights law, jurisprudence, history of law, comparative law, criminal law, private law, and customary law at various universities in South Africa, the United Kingdom, the USA, and the Netherlands.
Additionally, she authored and presented papers, and actively participated in national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops. Her areas of focus included sociological jurisprudence, human rights, customary law, and the impact of law on society, particularly on women and children.
Justice Mokgoro was married to former North West Premier, Professor Job Mokgoro. The Mokgoro family is expected to release a statement soon.
