A cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Soweto, south of Johannesburg, was foiled as police engaged in a shootout with the suspects.
The robbers had planned to bomb a CIT van in Dobsonville on Saturday night, but their intentions were intercepted by the police.
According to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a police spokesperson, officers received information about the planned attack and swiftly proceeded to the scene.
Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire from the suspects, prompting them to return fire. As a result, two suspects were fatally wounded in the exchange.
The police were able to recover an R5 rifle, three AK47s, and three vehicles that were used in the commission of the crime. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola emphasized that the police will continue to take decisive action against CIT heists and other serious and violent crimes.
“Our intelligence operators are on the ground, our teams are on high alert. We cannot coexist with criminals; it’s either them or us.
“Our focus is to ensure the safety and security of law-abiding citizens,” stated Masemola. He further added that the police will intensify their efforts to apprehend and successfully convict those involved in CIT crimes in the country.
A manhunt has been launched to locate the remaining suspects who fled the scene on foot. The police have urged anyone with information to contact the Dobsonville police station.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against organized crime and the determination of the South African police to protect the public from such threats. The successful intervention in this CIT heist highlights the effectiveness of intelligence gathering and the swift response of law enforcement agencies in preventing criminal activities.
As the police continue their efforts to maintain law and order, citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Together, we can contribute to a safer and more secure society.
