Department Of Education Calls For Investigation Into Curro’s Value System And Racial Equality

This call for investigation comes after pictures from a primary school pupils' career day event circulated, showing a black child posed as a cashier while white children posed as veterinarians and other professions.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed the need for an urgent investigation into the constitutionality of Curro’s value system. The department is concerned about the level of conscientization regarding racial equality and human rights across all Curro institutions and personnel.

This call for investigation comes after pictures from a primary school pupils’ career day event circulated, showing a black child posed as a cashier while white children posed as veterinarians and other professions.

Curro issued an apology, stating that the picture was initially posted by the company on social media but was later deleted due to the backlash.

The company has promised to investigate the incident, raising questions about whether the child chose to pose as a cashier or if the decision was made by Curro officials.

The GDE has acknowledged Curro Holdings’ statement regarding the incident. However, the department emphasizes that this acknowledgement should be viewed in the context of recent racial challenges faced by Curro, including an incident where a black teacher was called a monkey at one of its institutions.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona highlights that racial incidents are taken seriously by the GDE as they can perpetuate attitudes that reflect a society still grappling with racism.

Such attitudes not only pose a threat to the education system and its goal of creating model citizens but also to a nation that is continuously working towards overcoming these deep-rooted prejudices.

Mabona also stresses the importance of verifying whether there are adequate mechanisms of accountability in place for those who fail to embrace equality and nonracialism within Curro’s institutions.

The GDE’s call for investigation aims to ensure that the value system and practices within Curro promote inclusivity, racial equality, and respect for human rights.
