The two security officers involved in the incident were identified as Chris Mahlangu (29) and 40-year-old Mpho Mothoveni. According to the police spokesperson, Hlulani Mashaba, the sequence of events leading to the tragic incident is as follows:
On that fateful day, the 29-year-old security guard had booked a firearm at work and went to visit his colleague, who happened to be the 40-year-old man from the same security company.
However, upon arriving at the colleague’s residence, he found only the man’s wife present. In a disturbing turn of events, he allegedly threatened her with the firearm.
The wife, terrified and fearing for her life, managed to inform the intruder that her husband was attending a wedding in the area. This seemingly angered the security guard, who then left the premises.
It was during this time that the neighbour who had overheard the commotion and the wife’s cries for help, decided to intervene. Seizing the opportunity, he took his own firearm and followed the security guard, determined to protect the woman from any further harm.
As the security guard reached the wedding venue, he encountered his colleague, who was also a security guard. In a fit of rage, he shot the 40-year-old man, causing him serious injuries. However, before he could carry out any further acts of violence, the neighbour swiftly responded by shooting the 29-year-old security guard.
Upon receiving reports of the shooting, the police were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene. Emergency personnel accompanied them, only to find both men lying in a pool of blood on the street, their lives tragically cut short.
The neighbour, who had acted in defense of the woman, was subsequently arrested for murder. The police have opened two cases of murder for further investigation, aiming to gather all the necessary evidence and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic incident has left the community in mourning, as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of two lives. The families of both the deceased are devastated and seeking answers as to what led to this shocking act of violence.
The accused neighbour is expected to appear before the Moutse Magistrate’s Court in the near future, where he will face charges related to the murder.
