On Friday, 15 March 2024, members of the SAPS Sydenham Trio Task Team were on duty when they noticed a suspicious motor vehicle parked at 45th Cutting, West Riding Mosque. The vehicle, a red Haval, had a false number plate, raising suspicions among the officers.
Keeping a close watch on the vehicle, the team observed an African male exit the red Haval and approach a nearby grey Toyota Etios. Using a homemade Allen key, the suspect opened the door of the Toyota and began attempting to strip the vehicle.

Acting swiftly, the members of the task team moved in tactically and apprehended the suspect, catching him in the act of trying to steal the car.
The suspect was taken back to the red Haval, where two other African males were found sitting inside. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed various car-breaking implements and a signal jammer in the possession of the suspects.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the members of the task team placed all three suspects under arrest.
The arrested individuals were then transported to the SAPS Sydenham station for further investigation. They are set to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 March 2024, where they will face charges of attempted theft of a motor vehicle and possession of car-breaking implements.

Ethekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, commended the SAPS Sydenham Trio Task Team for their swift action and successful arrest.
By removing these three career criminals from the streets, the team has made a significant contribution to ensuring the safety and security of the community.
