A man from the North West, Daniel Mokwai, 62, has been accused of a heinous crime—murdering his son and two of his wife’s young relatives by feeding them poison-laced pies.
Mokwai was taken into custody on Monday and appeared before the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. During the session, it was decided that Mokwai will remain in custody until the case resumes on September 4th. This postponement is intended to provide Mokwai enough time to appoint a legal representative.

According to police spokesperson Col Adéle Myburgh, the three victims died over a span of three years. The identity of the deceased consists of two boys aged 16 and 17, who were the wife’s relatives, and Mothibi Alpheos Mokwai, the accused’s 31-year-old son. All three deaths followed a similar pattern, with each falling ill and succumbing after consuming pies bought by Mokwai.
Col Myburgh further disclosed that in all three instances, Mokwai claimed insurance policies following the deaths. The growing number of victims eventually aroused suspicion among family members.

The correlation between the consumption of pies and the subsequent fatalities prompted them to alert the authorities. As a result, a murder case was initiated, and the bodies were exhumed for further examination.
Pathology reports substantiated the family’s suspicions by confirming that the victims had been poisoned. This alarming revelation raises numerous questions about the extent of Mokwai’s alleged involvement and the potential motives behind these tragic events. As the case continues to unfold, the public remains poised for further developments.
