He highlighted the importance of uploading the required documents within seven days to avoid being deprioritized.

Gauteng Education Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Matome Chiloane has issued a critical advisory to parents regarding the school admissions process.

Chiloane explained that the delayed start was due to several significant activities, including the School Governing Body (SGB) elections and national general elections, which necessitated the formation of a government afterward.

Despite the late start, he assured parents that the process of school placement is still on track.

Since its inception in 2015, the online application system has seen substantial improvements, thanks to feedback from stakeholders and parents.

The Department of Education now provides regular updates via the contact number given by parents, enhancing communication significantly. Chiloane stated, “I’m confident to say the system is working very well. This academic year alone, we have placed over 400,000 pupils.”

Chiloane urged parents to follow the guidelines meticulously to ensure their child’s successful placement. This includes providing accurate contact details and selecting multiple schools to avoid placement issues.

He highlighted the importance of uploading the required documents within seven days to avoid being deprioritized. Furthermore, he strongly advised against submitting fraudulent documents, warning that the system is capable of detecting inconsistencies.

The following documents are essential for the application process:

  • Parent ID/passport/refugee permit/asylum seeker permit/permanent residence permit/study permit
  • Child’s SA birth certificate
  • Proof of home address
  • Proof of work address
  • Latest school report
  • Clinic/vaccination/immunization card

All documents must be certified. The Department has also set up 80 walk-in centers to assist parents with their applications, thereby mitigating the risk of data theft from unreliable internet cafes.
